Vision
We are committed to develop the professionals with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. To prepare the skilled graduates to achieve sustainable food security and to deal with climate change with the help of state-of-the art techniques is one of the major goals to achieve.
Mission
To provide the professional knowledge of agriculture as an art, science, and business that will prepare the graduates to be in frontline and fight for food security, and sustainable development. The department is committed to develop an extraordinary teaching and training environment to lead the future workforce by an updated curriculum, modern and innovative research, and entrepreneurship with public-private-partnership. Moreover, we aim to integrate the agriculture with associated sciences to broaden the scope of agriculture graduates and to develop a broad pattern of interaction for food security and zero hunger.
Scope
Agriculture has a substantial impact in global and domestic economy. Agriculture and environmental sciences have a broader scope in industry, business, and public sector. There are fast growing academic research and industrial applications of various fields of agricultural sciences. There are career development opportunities in the areas of plant breeding, genetics, genomics, seed sciences, soil sciences, horticultural sciences, entomology, pathology, agricultural economics, extension. For business lovers, agricultural development as business, import and export of agricultural commodities have multiple opportunities. Agricultural financing and banking will be another direction of its scope.
Introduction
With its establishment on March 21, 2022, the department adopted a very vibrant and dynamic approach to cater for our national needs and train post-graduate students i.e., (M. Sc (Hons.) and (PhD), in technologies and approaches used in modern mechanized agriculture to sustain food production under climate change scenario. At present, the major thrust of the department is on plant breeding, soil science, and entomology disciplines to conduct basic and applied research. Plant genetics, genomics, molecular breeding, soil science and entomology are the highly dynamic disciplines which contribute in the sustainable and climate resilient agriculture for the food security and national development. The department will actively engage in:
- Teaching and dissertation research of post-graduate students i.e.,M.Sc (Hons.) and (PhD),to produce highly trained workforce in the advanced disciplines of agriculture science to contribute significantly towards the national development;
- The development of elite crop varieties for sustainable agricultural production.
At present, the highly skilled, dynamic and dedicated faculty of the department is running the projects funded by different national and international funding organizations such as HEC, PSF, PARB, Asian Development Bank (ADB), National Natural Science Foundation of China etc. to develop elite climate resilient cotton, barley, and wheat lines through the integration of molecular genetics, bioinformatics, structural genomics, functional genomics, comparative genomics, computational genomics and molecular breeding approaches.
The department has established research collaboration with the national and international research organizations including Cotton Research Institute (CRI), Multan, Pakistan; Cotton Research Station (CRS), Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, Pakistan; Wheat Research Institute (WRI), Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, Pakistan; All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), Islamabad, Pakistan; Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, China; Shandong Agricultural University, Shandong, China; Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China; University of Aberdeen, UK; USDA-ARS, USA etc.
