Government College University Faisalabad celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Pakistan in a dignified ceremony held at the STC Hall, New Campus

The event was graced by His Excellency Mr. Sun Yan, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lahore, accompanied by Mr. Li Hao Teng, Director of the Political Affairs Division of the Chinese Consulate in Lahore. Distinguished guests also included Dr. Saddam Hussain, Dean of the Confucius Institute at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad.
Prof. Dr. Nasir Amin, Pro Vice Chancellor of GCUF, warmly welcomed the guests and highlighted the enduring and time-tested friendship between Pakistan and China. He noted that the relationship between the two nations has evolved into an all-weather strategic cooperative partnership built on mutual trust, respect, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and institutions for their continuous support in higher education, research, innovation, and human resource development.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Riaz, Director of the Directorate of International Linkages, emphasized the critical role of international collaborations in advancing academic excellence. He outlined GCUF’s initiatives to strengthen partnerships with Chinese universities through joint research, student and faculty exchange programs, scholarships, and industrial cooperation. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to expanding meaningful academic and cultural engagement with China.
Dr. Saddam Hussain highlighted the transformative role of the Confucius Institute in promoting Chinese language and culture in Pakistan. He announced that new scholarship opportunities are expected to be introduced from September 2026 and unveiled the establishment of the Confucius Institute UAF Subset at Government College University Faisalabad. This important milestone will provide GCUF students and faculty with greater access to Chinese language education, cultural exchange, and scholarship opportunities.
In his keynote address, His Excellency Sun Yan underscored the deep-rooted and iron-clad friendship between Pakistan and China. He recalled China’s longstanding support in landmark projects such as the Karakoram Highway and highlighted emerging cooperation in strategic sectors, including agriculture, education, information technology, and the jointly developed JF-17 Thunder Fighter Jets and Hangor-class submarine program. He emphasized that the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC 2.0) will create new opportunities in industry, agriculture, mining, and technology, further strengthening bilateral ties.
Representing the Chinese alumni community at GCUF, Prof. Dr. Shafaqat Ali shared that alumni from approximately 30 Chinese universities are serving in key academic and administrative positions at the university. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to maximize research collaboration, scholarship opportunities, and institutional partnerships between Pakistan and China.
A key highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a commemorative plaque marking the establishment of the Confucius Institute UAF Subset at GCUF. The plaque was presented by His Excellency Sun Yan to Prof. Dr. Nasir Amin, making the anniversary celebration even more memorable.
The celebrations also included a cake-cutting ceremony, interactive discussions with faculty members, and the plantation of a commemorative tree to mark His Excellency’s visit and symbolize the growing friendship between the two nations.
During the interactive session, Dr. Muhammad Tahir ul Qamar, Deputy Director of the Directorate of International Linkages, proposed the development of a joint information portal through the Chinese Consulate or the Confucius Institute platform to provide students and faculty with centralized access to information on scholarships, exchange programs, collaborative research opportunities, and other bilateral initiatives.
The event was organized in line with the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan, and the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad, which encouraged universities across the country to commemorate this historic milestone and reaffirm the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China. The ceremony was attended by deans, directors, faculty members, Chinese alumni, and students, reflecting the strong interest of the university community in further strengthening academic and cultural ties between Pakistan and China.
The Directorate of International Linkages, Government College University Faisalabad, coordinated the event under the visionary leadership and continuous support of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rauf-I-Azam.
