GCUF Hosts Two-Day LEGUMINOSE Workshop on Sustainable Agriculture

Government College University Faisalabad, through its Department of Environmental Sciences, organized a two-day workshop titled “Agricultural Sustainability and Soil Multi functionality in Legume-Cereal Inter-cropping” under the Horizon Europe LEGUMINOSE Project.

The workshop brought together national and international experts to discuss climate-smart farming practices, improved crop productivity, soil health, and food security. Chief Guest Dr. Ghulam Sarwar, Additional Director General, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), highlighted the importance of cereal-legume inter-cropping for enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening Pakistan’s food system.

At this occasion Vice Chancellor GCUF Prof. Dr. Rauf-i-Azam stressed the urgent need for sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices to address emerging environmental challenges. Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof. Dr. Farhat Jabeen underlined the role of cereal-legume inter-cropping in improving crop yields and soil multi functionality, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.

The workshop featured participation from experts from Pakistan, Germany, and Italy, including Dr. Norman Gentsch of Leibniz University Hannover and Dr. Shamina Imran Pathan of the University of Florence, along with scientists from AARI and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Young researchers also presented innovative studies on biochar, soil carbon, and inter-cropping systems during a student session.

The concluding ceremony included a summary by Principal Organizer Prof. Dr. Muhammad Riaz, who termed the workshop an important step toward promoting sustainable agriculture through international collaboration and research.
