Seminar on Applied Data Science: How Big Data and AI Drive Decisions in Practice Held at GC University Faisalabad

The Department of Statistics, Government College University Faisalabad, organized a one-day seminar titled “Applied Data Science: How Big Data and AI Drive Decisions in Practice.” The seminar aimed to highlight the emerging role of data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and statistical methodologies in modern decision-making across business, finance, and policy domains.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Ijlal Ahmad Haqqani, Deputy Director, Big Data Analytics Division, Research Department, State Bank of Pakistan, delivered an insightful talk on the integration of Big Data analytics, AI algorithms, and predictive modeling in economic forecasting and evidence-based policymaking. He emphasized that data-driven decision systems are transforming institutions by enabling faster, more accurate, and transparent insights—redefining how policies are formulated and implemented.
Prof. Dr. Faisal Maqbool Zahid, Chairperson, Department of Statistics, also addressed the audience, underlining the importance of statistical literacy, data governance, and algorithmic accountability in the age of Big Data. He noted that the effective use of statistical tools and machine learning models is crucial not only for research but also for guiding national development policies.
After that a discussion with the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Rauf-I-Azam on AI use and drive decision, the Vice Chancellor stressed that the future of higher education and research lies in embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and innovative technologies to enhance evidence-based decision-making. He remarked that universities must prepare graduates not only to interpret data but also to ethically harness its power for societal and economic progress.
Prof. Dr. Rauf-i-Azam appreciated the Department of Statistics for organizing such an intellectually stimulating event that bridges academic learning with practical applications in industry and governance.
