Welcome to the Department of Environmental Sciences. We are a part of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the GC University Faisalabad (GCUF). The department has a young history but already is a success story for GCUF by successfully running undergraduate (4 years B.Sc.) and postgraduate (2 years M.Sc., 2 years M.Phil., and Ph.D.) programs. These programs were started less than 10 years ago; now they are equal if not a major force in GCUF in terms of student enrolment, extra-mural grants and in addressing environmental and sustainability in resource management issues. There is a good blend of faculty at our department comprising regular appointments, HEC (Higher Education Commission of Pakistan) tenure-track faculty, HEC foreign faculty, on contract, and visiting lecturers. We are competent in and capable of delivering the best. Including myself, we have HEC approved Ph.D. supervisors in our department.
Our faculty, students, and staff are involved in teaching, research, and outreach in our community. Currently, we have a total of Rs. 3 million worth research grant from HEC. Simultaneously, we are writing a grant proposal to establish a Center of Excellence for Sustainable and Environmental Management (CESEM) at GCUF. We are in the phases of building a greenhouse, laboratories, and additional workspace for faculty and students. We have resource sharing collaborations with institutes at national level, such as, the Institute of Environmental Science & Engineering (IESE) of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Institute of Soil & Environmental Sciences of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) Faisalabad, and others. These institutes let our students conduct research work at their laboratories and fields to help us thrive in these tough times when we are struggling to equip our own greenhouse and laboratories.
Our students are particularly active through celebrating World Environment Day each year. You can see their activities on the department’s website and/or on face book. Our students are punctual, hardworking, and respectful to their teachers. From now on, we would organize research symposia at annual basis where students would get a chance to present their research and compete for positions of the best oral and poster presentations. This will help them to be confident on what they are doing. The goal is to make them ready to be successful at job interviews. I wish our students do well in their professional career and private life. On behalf of my colleagues, I thank them for making our department the place to study, work, and have fun. Have a great day every day.
The vision of the department is to highlight the fact that Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary subject combining natural processes, physical environment and human activities. The understanding of knowledge and skills acquired through studying Environmental Science is critical to the attainment of sustainable development and sound environmental management.
The mission of the Department is to make people aware of the hazards of environmental pollution and other related issues and offer viable solutions to these problems.
Environmental pollution is an issue of utmost importance globally. The awakening of environmental awareness has led to massive changes. Industry is facing tougher regulations regarding the safety and environmental acceptability of its products. Research opportunities in Environmental Sciences are growing as new programmes open up to tackle local, national, regional or global problems of Environmental Sciences at both theoretical and applied levels.
Understanding and assessing the myriad of environmental problems and devising national strategies and methods for their control are one of the major international challenges of modern technological world. There is a global demand for pollution abatement which requires a sound technical knowledge of factors and processes including Earth and Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Medicine and Engineering, and the development of new disciplines like Environmental Toxicology and Risk Assessment. It requires to evolve and develop programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, involving elements and fundamental principles of Medicine, Engineering and Science with a practical approach to solve issues of the developing countries. Hence, degree programmes in Environmental Sciences will bridge the gap existing between disciplines. As a result of the implementation of Government’s policy on health, environment and controlling environmental pollution, there shall be a great demand for technical and consultative services. By introducing the discipline of Environmental Sciences, we shall be able to produce professionals capable of doing technical and consultative work related to environmental and natural history studies and would replace foreign consultants. The challenges of 21st century would require advance research and activities in the field of Environmental Sciences. It is therefore necessary to develop the research facilities in order to cope with future demands for quality production under WTO regime.
The Department of Environmental Sciences was established at GC University, Faisalabad in 2004. The faculty of the Department includes highly qualified teachers who are involved in several research projects. At present, the Department is offering several academic programmes in the subject of Environmental Sciences which include B.S. (4-Year), M.Sc. (2-Year), M.S. / M Phil. (2-Year) and Ph.D. Efforts are being made to further enhance research activities in the Department through various research projects financed by the Government and autonomous bodies e.g. PSF, HEC, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Science & Technology and Government of the Punjab etc. The Department also shares its research activities with other leading scientific institutions within the country and abroad through collaborative research programmes. Laboratories and library of the Department are being equipped with sophisticated instruments, latest books and research journals.
