One Day Seminar on Development of Vaccines: Current Status & Future Perspectives

A one day Seminar on “Development of Vaccines: Current Status and Future Perspectives” was organized by Department of Microbiology, Govt. College University Faisalabad on April 22, 2014 in Hashmat Hall, Basic Sciences Block. Prof. Dr. Zakir Hussain Vice Chancellor (Chief Guest), Prof. Dr. Naureen Aziz Qureshi, Dean F S&T, Dr. Muhammad Hidayat Rasool, Chairman Department of Microbiology & Director Undergraduate Studies, Resource Persons Prof. Dr. Khushi Muhammad, Chairman Department of Microbiology, UVAS, Lahore, Prof. Dr. Abdul Haq, Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Faisalabad and Dr. Rani Faryal Faheem Tahir, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad were present in the Seminar. A large number of guests, faculty members of GCUF, BS & M. Phil students of Microbiology attended the seminar as audience.

Dr Muhammad Saqalein, Lecturer and Dr Saima Muzammil, Assistant Professor of Microbiology arbitrated the inaugural and technical session, respectively. After Qirat and Naat, Dr. Muhammad Hidayat Rasool, Chairman Microbiology in his welcome address highlighted the importance of Microbiology and the role of microorganisms both as harmful and beneficial agents in allied disciplines of biosciences. He further explained the importance of vaccine and vaccination for the prophylaxis against infectious diseases. In the second part of his speech, Dr Rasool highlighted the progress and achievements of the Department of Microbiology and drew the attention of the chair towards the current problems of the Department.

Prof. Dr Zakir Hussain in his presidential address emphasized on the importance of child immunization and the need of vaccine development against newly emerging infectious diseases especially the Dengue Fever. He further added that the child death rate in the country is alarming and needs to be addressed on emergency basis otherwise Pakistan would not be able to achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015. In the second part, Dr. Zakir appreciated the efforts of the Chairman and the progress of the Department at very rapid pace during short span of time. He further assured the Chairman for providing space and full filling all the future needs of the Department in the best possible way. At the end of the session, Chief Guest distributed souvenirs and shields among the resource persons and organizers.

During the Technical sessions, all the resource persons discussed the research work and shared their life time experience on the topic in length. The audience especially the students took keen interest in their lectures and asked many relevant questions. At the end, Prof. Dr. Naureen Aziz Qureshi, Dean F S&T gave her opinion about the seminar and presented vote thanks to the respected guests and resource persons.
